Before anyone is going to complain about me using the english speaking section. Well, let's just say, it's there and I am certain that once it actually gets used english speaking people will find their way to this forum and start contributing.

Anyhow, I've been wondering about something.

Somebody suggested to use a different word once you are not training the formal re-call (Hier) in Schutzhund. Means to use a different word than Hier while you are on a walk.

We've never done that. Hier means Hier and the dogs can differ a walk from Schutzhund. Do you think using a different word is a little overboard? Why would anyone go through all the trouble to re-train a dog so he listens to a different word when he's off training. Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

I would like to get German Opinions on Crate Training

I am debating with people from the US, dog handlers that are also involved with the Schutzhundsport, whether or not 16+ hours of crating dogs in the house is considered abusive. I personally cannot comprehend that you would lock up your dog sometimes more than 16 hours a day in a crate like this:

In Germany it wouldn't only be against the law but I think there is a huge difference between the mentalities and I would love to see German opinions on crating dogs in the house in crates like that and how you feel about it. I know I can't be the only one that can't comprehend that.

For example, an arthritic lab got shot by the police in oakland, some people that are pro crating say that it keeps their dogs safe from getting shot by the cops (if they ever have to make their way into the house). I can't comprehend that you would lock your dog into a crate because you have to be scared that the cops get into your house and shoot your dog just because they felt threatened. It's something that doesn't happen over here... at least I've never heard of it. If a dog gets shot than there is a reason.

Another justification is that they fear that the dog could get in trouble, eat anything he shouldn't, hang himself around the house... etc, etc, etc,

Honestly, I've never heard of any dog that hung himself. Not in the Shepherd Szene I know.

Kennels that are build according to the law, where a dog has enough space to roam, stretch and lay back down, that is something I can understand and I have no problems using them but using a crate, such in the picture and locking a dog up for 16 hours a day...how do you feel about that?

Mine eyes have seen the terror of the coming schutzhund trial,
I have handed in my scorebook, but my brain is in denial,
I'll be looking for the port-a-potty in a little while,
I wish I'd stayed in bed.

A qualifying score is what I'm hoping to receive,
Because we train so hard!

I thought I was prepared to handle any circumstance,
My dog went down the first leg and I thought we had a chance,
Then he circled on the corner and I almost s**t my pants,
The points are coming off!

The judge gave me the signal and I gave my dog a call,
He hit me like a freight train and he nearly broke my balls,
I'd have me a chihuahua, if I had some sense at all!

We went to do protection, it's his favorite part, you see,
I sent him out to search six blinds, he thought that he'd run three,
He ignored me for the callout, he can be so ornery!

It's amazing, it's a wonder that we got a passing score!
My dog has done so many things he's never done before,
But this schutzhund is addictive, and we'll all be back for more,
I'm glad this trial is done!
